摘要

郭嵩焘在中西文明比较视野中提出"本末论",认为文明之本为"人心风俗",其末为"民富国强".郭认为,西方文明之"先进"在于其"政教""经济",即在政治上推行民主、法治,此为其本;在经济上重视工商之业,由此使公、私两得其利,此为其末."本末论"对传统"道器论"以及晚清洋务派"中体西用论"都有所突破,体现在郭所持的"本末一体""道器不离"思想上,这也是我国近代"器不弃道""道随器变"的制度改良运动的先声.

Abstract

In the comparative perspective of Chinese and Western civilizations,Guo Songtao proposed the concept of"priority and se-quence theory",suggesting that the essence of civilization lies in"people's hearts and customs",and its end goal is"prosperity of the people and strength of the country".Guo believed that the"advanced"aspects of Western civilization lie in its"political system"and"economy",namely the promotion of democracy and rule of law in politics,which constitutes its essence,and the emphasis on industri-al and commercial activities in the economy,leading to mutual benefits for both the public and private sectors,which constitutes its end goal.The concept of"priority and sequence theory"breaks through the traditional"logos and utensils theory"and the late Qing Dynas-ty's"integration of Chinese essence with Western application".This is reflected in Guo's idea of the unity of essence and end,and the inseparability of doctrine and vessel,which laid the groundwork for the early stages of China's modern institutional reform movement characterized by"not abandoning principles for tools"and"adapting principles to suit tools".
