The standardization of scientific terminology is foundational to promoting scientific and technological innovation, establishing scientific discourse systems, and striving for international discourse power in science and technology. The Chenier(and the related Chenier Plain)is a unique and important type of coastal sedimentary landform, but its translation has not been unified.Since 1970,there have been four main categories and eight types of Chinese translations for Chenier,with"Bei-Qiao-Di"being relatively common. This situation is not conducive to the unified expression and efficient dissemination of terminology in the Chinese context. This paper first elaborates on the concept of Chenier, that is,a coarse-grained natural embankment located on the high tide flat, along the coast, and left by erosion. Then, the above translations are analyzed and commented on.Although"Bei-Qiao-Di"is the most widely used,Chenier can be mainly composed of shell material or dominated by siliceous sand and gravel, thus causing a contradiction.Based on the connotation and characteristics of terminology translation, this paper suggests translating Chenier as"Chao-Tan-Di",and Chenier Plain as"Chao-Tan-Di-Ping-Yuan".Considering the material composition, there are two types of Chao-Tan-Di(Cheniers):Sandy Chenier and Shelly Chenier, the latter of which can be simply referred to as"Bei-Qiao-Di",as well as the corresponding"Bei-Qiao-Di-Ping-Yuan".
