To understand the reproductive biology characteristics of Sebastiscus marmoratus under artificial breeding, gonad samples of S.marmoratus in different months from May 2021 to June 2023 were sampled;and the gonadal phenotypes and tissue changes, development cycles, gonad index, and absolute fecundity at different stages were analyzed. Results show that S.marmoratus is a typical ovoviviparous fish;and the sperm enters the ovary to form fertilized eggs and hatch into larvae, which is called as gestation period. The testis was cystic type and could be divided into 6 stages. The ovary was partially synchronized and could be divided into 7 stages. The results of gonad staging and index in each month show that the breeding time of S.marmoratus was from December to April of the next year, during which the male ones were sexually matured in the 1st year and the female was sexually matured in the 2nd year. The gonad index increased significantly during the development stage(P<0.05),decreased significantly after sperm ejaculation and calving. In addition, the average absolute fecundity of 1-4-year-old S.marmoratus were 7 087,(19 726±4 470),(35 924±4 190),and(43 203±6 204)grains,respectively.There are significant differences in each age group. The equation fitting shows that the absolute fecundity was binomially related to the body length and mass. This study is the first attempt to conduct continuous tracking on the gonad development course and reproductive characteristics of S.marmoratus under artificial breeding conditions in two years, and shall help deepen the understanding of its reproductive characteristics and improve the level of large-scale breeding technology.
