The two translation theories,"Elegant Translation"and"Hard Translation",are highly representative in the history of modern Chinese literature.Their debate reflects the different understandings of New Literature from the May Fourth Movement held by Guo Moruo and Lu Xun.This paper mainly analyzes the different translation theories of Guo Moruo and Lu Xun,tracing back to the differ-ences in their literary views.It examines their divergent opinions on the purpose,function,and status of translation,the relationship be-tween translation and creation,and the impact of translation on the youth.Lu Xun has more and higher expectations for the function and role of translation.
