The Plum in the Golden Vase is known by Feng Menglong as the first of the"four wonderful books of the Ming Dynasty".The novel falsely depicts a historical story that took place in the Song Dynasty,reflecting the common life and social customs of the Ming Dynasty.It has had many in-fluences on the creation of The Dream of the Red Chamber in later generations.The novel has over one million words and mentions the Jiangnan city of Huzhou more than ten times.It contains both heart wrenching historical allusions that took place in Huzhou and numerous natural and man-made products produced in Huzhou,as well as famous historical figures from Huzhou and Huzhou characters created in the novel.The novel reflects the important position and historical influence of Huzhou during the Ming Dynasty from one aspect.
