INHERITANCE OF HERITAGE VALUES OF MING DYNASTY ARCHI-TECTURE IN NANJING AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE CITY
Nanjing is well known for its history and culture,and the construction of Nanjing as the capital during the Ming Dynasty laid down the most basic spatial frameworks for the city.However,during and after the Ming and Qing dynasties,the city of Nanjing suffered from warfare and few pieces of architectural heritage escaped battle damage.How should the architectural heritage from the Ming Dynasty be protected and its heritage values faithfully expressed?How to inherit the urban cultural heritage and make heritage conservation resonate with urban culture?These are the foremost questions during the heritage conservation works.Taking three projects that the author has personally been involved in—the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum,the Nanjing Drum Tower,and Linggu Temple—as examples,this article discuss-es how the heritage contents and values of Ming Dynasty architecture should be identified and explained,how the expressions of the authenticity and integrity of historical in-formation should be reflected in conservation practices,and how the stories of architectural heritage should be told and the historic inheritance of the city could be complemented.
