Treatment of Tumor-Related Constipation from Wind Pathogen
Constipation is a common complication and adverse reaction in the treatment of malignant tumors. It induces nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and other symptoms in mild cases and paralytic intestinal obstruction in severe cases, even threatening patients'life. The modern medical therapies for tumor-related constipation include enema, laxatives, and probiotics, which mainly treat the symptoms but not eradicate the root cause. As a result, the disease is prone to relapse.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)treats constipation from a holistic view, demonstrating better effect. The growth of tumor consumes healthy qi.Surgery causes the losses of qi and blood, and radiotherapy and chemotherapy as the fire toxin and heat pathogen damage yin and body fluid.Accordingly, intestine deficiency occurs and the body becomes susceptible to the wind pathogen, which finally lead to constipation.Professor Shu Peng believes that the core pathogenesis of this disease is intestine deficiency and wind stagnation and thus the treatment should follow the principle of dispersing, tonifying, dredging, descending, dispersing wind, and soothing the intestine. This paper summarizes the syndrome differentiation ideas and commonly used drugs in the treatment of constipation by Professor Shu,and elaborates on the experience of Professor Shu in treating tumor-related constipation from wind pathogen, aiming to provide reference for clinical practice.
