Modified Qingqi Huatan Decoction Treats Severe Pneumonia in Patients with Syndrome of Phlegm-Heat Obstructing Lung
Objective To explore the clinical effect of Qingqi Huatan Decoction on severe pneumonia in the patients with the syndrome of phlegm-heat obstructing lung.Methods Eighty patients with severe pneumonia due to phlegm-heat obstructing lung treated in the department of intensive care unit of the Fifth People's Hospital of Nanhai District from February 2021 to June 2023 were selected and randomized into two groups(n=40).The control group only accepted comprehensive treatment of Western medicine,including anti-infection intervention,mechanical ventilation,convulsion and asthma relieving,phlegm drainage,and enteral nutrition support.The observation group received modified Qingqi Huatan Decoction orally or nasally twice per day on the basis of the therapy in the control group.Both groups were treated for 10 days.The serum levels of C-reactive protein(CRP)and procalcitonin(PCT)were measured before and after treatment.In addition,the body temperature,respiratory rate,shock,oxygenation index,secretions,chest image,and mechanical ventilation of the two groups were observed before and after treatment.The clinical symptoms and signs were graded and scored,and the clinical efficacy was evaluated based on the scores.Results After treatment,the serum levels of CRP and PCT declined in both groups and they were lower in the observation group than in the control group(P<0.05).The clinical efficacy in the observation group was higher than that in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion Modified Qingqi Huatan Decoction is effective in the treatment of severe pneumonia in the patients with the syndrome of phlegm-heat obstructing lung and should be promoted in clinical practice.
