Clinical Observation of Fumigation Combined with Meibomian Gland Massage for the Treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction-Associated Dry Eye
Objective To inspect the clinical effect of a self-formulated herbal fumigation formula combined with meibomian gland massage in the treatment of patients with meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD)-associated dry eye. Methods 70 patients with MGD-associated dry eye were randomly divided into two groups:the meibomian gland massage group(36 patients)and the traditional Chinese medicine fumigation group(34 patients). The meibomian gland massage group treated the patients with dry eye by meibomian gland massage, while the traditional Chinese medicine fumigation group treated the patients with traditional Chinese medicine fumigation based on the meibomian gland massage group. The Schirmer test before and after treatment was recorded and compared, and tear film rupture time and symptom improvement were observed. Results After treatment, the improvement of tear secretion in the traditional Chinese medicine fumigation group was better than that in the meibomian gland massage group(P<0.05).The tear film rupture time was prolonged in both groups, and the traditional Chinese medicine fumigation group had a longer tear film rupture time than the meibomian gland massage group, with a statistically significant difference(P<0.01).Symptom scores of both groups were lower than before treatment, with the traditional Chinese medicine fumigation group showing a significantly greater reduction than the meibomian gland massage group(P<0.01).The total effective rate of the traditional Chinese medicine fumigation group(94.1%)was higher than that of the meibomian gland massage group(91.6%),but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusion The self-formulated herbal fumigation formula, when combined with meibomian gland massage, can effectively improve tear secretion and improve symptoms in patients with MGD-associated dry eye, providing a beneficial therapeutic effect.
