Study on the Activity of Water Extract of Polygala crotalarioides Buch.Ham.in Alleviating Physical Fatigue and Improving Sleep
Objective To study efficacy of water extract of Polygala crotalarioides Buch.Ham.(WEP)in alleviating physical fatigue and improving sleep,in order to provide an experimental basis for its further development. Methods Weight-bearing swimming test, liver glycogen, urea nitrogen and blood lactate levels in mice were used to study the alleviating physical fatigue effect of WEP.The sleep improvement effect of WEP was evaluated by threshold dose pentobarbital sodium sleep test, subthreshold dose pentobarbital sodium sleep test and threshold dose barbital sodium sleep test. Results Compared with the blank control group, the 400 mg/kg of WEP could significantly improve the weight-bearing swimming time in mice(P<0.05).At the same time,200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg could significantly increase the level of liver glycogen in mice(P<0.01,P<0.001),and 400 mg/kg could obviously reduce the serum urea nitrogen level in mice(P<0.001).However,each dose of WEP had no significant effect on the area under the blood lactate curve in mice(P>0.05).Compared with the blank control group, each dose of WEP had no significant effect on sleep time and sleep latency in mice(P>0.05).On the other hand,400 mg/kg dose of WEP could significantly increase the number of mice sleeping(P<0.05).Conclusion Within the dose range set by this study, the water extract of Polygala crotalarioides Buch.Ham.has the activity of alleviating physical fatigue, but the improving sleep effect is weak.
