On the Motivations for the Composition of Looking South of the Yangtze River:A Composition Created on the Chaoran Tower from the Cultural Perspective
The official period in Mizhou was a transitional stage in the journey of lyrics-writing for Su Shi.Be-sides the famous"Trilogy of Mizhou",Looking South of the Yangtze River:A Composition Created on the Chao-ran Tower is also a masterpiece by Su Shi that cannot be ignored. This work is rid of the sorrowful style typical of the lyrics of the Qingming Festival, displaying a free and elegant aura and showcasing the innovations and diver-sity about Su's lyrics writing in Mizhou. The reason behind the shifting is that Su Shi's creation of the poem based on the tune of Looking South of the Yangtze River is largely due to the influence of the complex of the cultures in the south of the Yangtze River which prevailed among the men of letters of that time. The relaxing and cheerful style reflects Su Shi's acceptance of the hedonistic expression mode in the lyrics on the Qingming Festival in the Song Dynasty. The optimistic thoughts symbolize Su Shi's wisdom acquired after assimilating the local culture,a combination of multiple cultures within and outside the Mizhou area.
