Experience of Elderly Patients with Osteoporosis:A Qualitative Study
Objective To explore the experience of elderly patients with osteoporosis(OP)and to provide reference for formulating relevant nursing plans. Methods A phenomenological study was conducted and purposive sampling method was used to select 16 elderly patients with OP in a tertiary hospital in Beijing for semi-structured interviews. The Colaizzi analysis method was used for data analysis. Results Four themes were extracted, including insufficient perceived benefits of exercise, fear of falling,self-perceived burden, and expectation to seek external support. Conclusions Elderly patients with OP have multidimen-sional problems and needs during the course of the disease.Medical staff should pay attention to the pa-tients'needs at different stages of the disease. While preventing and treating OP,they should explore and validate effective nursing intervention programs combined with guidance on exercises, fall prevention,psy-chological interventions, and extended care,so as to reduce the risk of fragility fractures and improve pa-tients'quality of life.
