Linguistic analysis and discourse analysis are different types of linguistic activities. The choice of one or the other depends entirely on the researcher's research purpose and motivation. As far as the relationship between the two is concerned, linguistic analysis can be conducted without involving discourse analysis, but discourse analysis cannot be done without linguistic analysis. This paper focuses on the question of"whether discourse analysis can be done without linguistic analysis".Through the functional linguistics analysis of a"problem-solution"text,the paper shows that the analysis of language use in discourse analysis is necessary, and proves the importance of linguistic analysis in discourse analysis.
