The Definition,Typology and Representation of Syntactic Alternations
There are many objections to the Surface Generalization Hypothesis in Construction Grammar.Evidence from psychological experiments,linguistic typology and historical linguistics all support the representation status of syntactic alternations.This paper defines the terms such as syntactic alternation,constructeme,allostructions and synonymous constructions,and summarizes the alternation types based on the three variables of argument number,argument case and argument order.There is asymmetry in syntactic alternation,and it is necessary to distinguish between diachronic or genetic asymmetry and synchronic or usage asymmetry.Compared with the Derivation Hypothesis,the construction network representation method can better capture the relevant characteristics of syntactic alternation.
