Reconstructing Chinese Poetics in Ku Hungming's English Translation of Chinese Poems
Translation plays an important role in national poetics and culture reconstruction. This paper takes Ku Hungming's English translation of certain Chinese verses as a case study. It investigates how the translator mediated between the source and target poetical norm, made his interpretative endeavours, and represented the host cultural identity through transmitting certain verses. The major focus is on the selection of texts, the strategies and norms adopted, the aesthetic effect achieved, and cultural implication encoded in the target language culture. Finally, reflection and criticism are made.
