Beyond Violence—Consensus and Community in Colum McCann's Apeirogon
Colum McCann's novel Apeirogon embodies his reflection on violence, consensus and community through the story of two Palestinian-Israeli families who have lost their children during the conflicts. On the basis of consensus of discursive politics, the novel criticizes violent resistance, imagining a non-violent resistance based on the nation-state and value-oriented tolerant reason. However, the antinomy exists between the means of non-violent resistance and the end of the occupation.A community with a shared future of mankind is beyond the nation-state frame, and the tension between consensus and community in this novel is worth exploration.
