The Lost Community:The"Brexit"Allusion in McEwan's The Cockroach
In September 2019,McEwan's The Cockroach was published as a direct response to Britain's"Brexit".With the delusional image of"cockroaches morphing into politicians",the pro-European McEwan believes that it is because populist politicians are as fanatical and mediocre as cockroaches that Britain's political situation is heading towards chaos and Brexit.Britain's initiative to leave the European Union is caricatured in the novel, which is not only the loss of the political and geopolitical community in the real sense, but also the loss of the metaphysical community of the spirit of friendship and love.In addition,McEwan also reveals the populist political spirit through the absurdity of the"Brexit"event, and again leads people to think about how the deep interconnectedness and intimacy of modern society can be possible, and how the ideal community can be sustained.
