On the Syntax-Semantics Interface of Conditional Complex Sentences in Chinese/English and Its Realization Mechanism and Paths
Within the theoretical framework of Cognitive Grammar, based on authentic data from BCC and COCA,this paper explores the syntax-semantics interface of conditional complex sentences in Chinese and English and its realization mechanism and paths from the two dimensions of(ir)real condition. It is contended that the syntax-semantics interface of(ir)real conditional complex sentences is a complex symbolic construction of pairing the complicated events with(ir)real conditional relationship and their syntactic structure.Grounding is the most effective and economic strategy in realizing this interface. The conceptualizer, with the overt or covert grounding elements of conditional complex sentences,or using relevant discourse markers and semi-inversion constructions, transforms the complicated event with(ir)real conditional relationship connected by trajector-landmark into the image schema, which is expressed as a(n)(ir)real conditional skeletal complex sentence. The conceptualizer, through finite clausal grounding, grammatically instantiates the(ir)real conditional skeletal complex sentence, pairing the(ir)real conditional event with the conditional clause and the resultative event with the resultative clause. They mutually map each other and linearly configurate the syntax-semantics interface of the(ir)real conditional complex sentence.
