A Study on the Integration of Illustration and Text in English Learners Reading Dictionaries'Illustration-Text Interpretation Based on Eye Movement Experiments
This study is based on eye tracking experiments and combines interviews and questionnaire surveys to examine the eye tracking characteristics of 60 English learners with different levels of proficiency in reading dictionary illustration-text definitions under different conditions(text only, illustration text matching and illustration text mismatch). The main focus is to demonstrate the effectiveness of illustration, language proficiency effects, and the relationship between illustration and text in the process of integrating dictionary's text and illustration. The experimental results show that:1)Under the condition of illustration text matching, the subjects deeply integrate the illustration and text, and the illustration improves the efficiency of their word meaning understanding.2)There is a language proficiency effect on the eye movement characteristics in the integration of illustration and text.Compared to low-level subjects,high-level subjects have a shorter total fixation time in illustration and text,a higher probability of fixation on illustrations, and a lower probability of text.3)The relationship between illustration and text in the integration is a master-slave relationship, with illustrations supporting text. The interview results show that the subjects'preference for reading text is mainly influenced by factors such as the authority, anchoring effect, and rich meaning of the text. The above results support the hypothesis of the integrated model of text and picture comprehension, and indicate that the integration process in the model is influenced by factors such as picture-text matching, subjects'language proficiency, and discourse characteristics.Based on this, the article further proposes a"Dictionary Illustration-Text Integration Model".
