Representation is the essence of parameters.GB's and MP's parametric explanations for typological differences and clustering effects are both based on representation. The universal representation mechanism is responsible for structure generation, and the particular representation arbitrates the well-formedness of syntactic derivation. Therefore, representation is not emergent, and it is closer to the optimal solution of Plato's problem than parameters and a parameter is an operation option triggered by representative well-formedness condition. The MP parameter theory uses function words'features as the atoms of parameter format, but the distribution of features in various heads, the relationship between features, and the availability of feature-driven operations all depend on hierarchical syntactic representation. The success of the MP parameter theory represented by the Cambridge School depends on the degree of recognition and elaboration of the representational nature of parameters.
