Through philosophical reflections on hermeneutics and the three climaxes and the fourth wave of the English translation of the Tao Te Ching,one of the most widely disseminated and respected Chinese texts in the West,the corresponding four hermeneutic modes of English translation of the Tao Te Ching are discussed.Centered on the retranslation of the Tao Te Ching and the discussion and analysis of the English translations of the three major rhetorical devices of ancient China,"Fu,Bi,Xing",four classic English translations by James Legge,Arthur Waley,Roger T.Ames,and Lin Yutang,are selected for a specific comparative analysis of how the four modes for trans-hermeneutics,namely,the modes of Western Studies,Classics Studies,Sinology and National Studies are manifested in the translation of the original text's rhetorical-grammatical cross-language interfaces.It is expected to provide linguistic theoretical expansion and practical reference for the Chinese National mode of the translation of the Tao Te Ching and facilitate the trans-hermeneutics research of Chinese classics.
