A Cognitive Grammar Approach to English Locative-Predicate Construction's Emergence
English Locative-Predicate Construction(EPLC)is unique in that a locative concept is encoded in the predicate verb.Previous studies focus on the N-V shift of the predicate verb with multi-dimensional interpretations, but the meaning of the construction and the cognitive motivation of the construction formation have not been analyzed in depth.Based on the construction emergence view and cognitive grammar theory, this paper explores the emergence process, semantic feature, and cognitive motivation of Locative-Predicate Construction. It is found that firstly, the emergence of EPLC is the result of the extended categorization of the prototypical transitive construction.Secondly,EPLC has three semantic features, namely, the strong state of the juxtaposition of multiple dynamic forces, the complex interactivity among constructional elements, and the delimitation and integrity assurance of the location. Finally, the emergence of EPLC is motivated by the adjustment of specificity, the change of mental scanning path, and the shift of prominence. This research provides a reference for the unified treatment of the emergence of unconventional constructions.
