The construction of free trade zones is an important measure for China to deepen reform and expand opening-up,and it is of great significance for building a new development pattern.Taking the four ma-jor free trade zones of Shanghai,Tianjin,Guangdong, and Fujian as examples, the paper uses the 2011-2016 Chinese customs export data and A-share listed company data to analyze the impact of the establishment of free trade zones on the export product quality of Chinese enterprises and its mechanism. The results show that the establishment of free trade zones has significantly improved the export product quality of enterprises.Further group testing shows that this promotion effect mainly exists in non-state-owned enterprises, mature en-terprises,capital-intensive industries, and non-monopolistic industries.Mechanism analysis finds that industri-al agglomeration is an important channel for the establishment of free trade zones to promote the improvement of enterprise export product quality. In addition, the paper also finds that the establishment of free trade zones has a spatial spillover effect, which significantly promotes the export product quality of enterprises within 100 kilometers. The policy implication of this paper is to expand the pilot scope of free trade zones and promote successful experiences to promote industrial agglomeration and thereby improve the export product quality of enterprises.
