Can National Innovation Demonstration Zones Promote Urban Green Development?
This paper adopts panel data of 278 cities in China from 2003 to 2021,and uses the multi-period difference-in-differences(DID)method to study the impact and mechanism of the construction of National Innovation Demonstration Zones(NIDZ)on urban green development. The results show that the NIDZ significantly improves the level of urban green development, and remains valid after a series of robustness tests. The heterogeneity test shows that the construction of NIDZ has a greater green promotion effect on larger cities,non-resource-dependent cities, and cities with higher factor market development. The mechanism test finds that the NIDZ promotes urban green development mainly through green technology innovation,high-tech industry agglomeration, and investment in science and education. Therefore,it is necessary to continuously promote the construction of NIDZ with green development as the goal orientation,adopt"city-specific policies"to promote the release of green effects in NIDZ,and smooth the key channels for NIDZ to promote urban green development.
