Research on the Characteristics and Origins of the Evolution of Screen Couch Form between the Han and Tang Dynasties
This study is dedicated to examining the characteristics and underlying causes of the transformation of screen couch(pingfeng ta)form from a low, flat structure to a taller one, spanning the transition from the Han(202 BCE-220 CE)to Tang(618-907 CE)dynasties.Utilizing sources such as stone carvings, tomb murals, archaeological findings, and relevant literature,a systematic analysis of the unique attributes of screen couch form during the periods of the Han and Tang Dynasties was carried out.The findings reveal that during the epoch from the Han to Tang Dynasties, the screen couch form underwent a progression in scale, transitioning from low to high,a shift in structure from open to enclosed,a change in screen style from single panel to multi-panel,and an evolution in the thematic content of screen paintings from educational to aesthetic.Furthermore,it is noted that the era of the Northern and Southern Dynasties(420-589 CE)played a vital role in shaping the screen couch form, marked by significant regional disparities in screen couch form between the northern and southern regions.Post-the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the development of screen couch form during the Sui and Tang Dynasties(581-907 CE)persisted based on the formats established in the northern regions during the preceding period. The reasons driving these transformations are intrinsically associated with the norms of traditional ceremonial practices, technological constraints, and the influence of external cultures.
