An Analysis of the Design Practice of Emotional Affordances in Furniture for Children with Autism (ASD)
To explore the feasibility of the emotional design method assisted by the availability theory in the application of furniture product design in order to better meet the emotional demands of autistic children in the field of furniture products, and then summarize the furniture design method for autistic children as a special group. The development status and design characteristics of furniture for autistic children around the world are investigated and analyzed, and examples are cited for in-depth analysis. The development and methodology of emotional design are introduced based on the three-layer theory of this methodology,i.e.,the instinctive layer, behavioral layer, and reflection layer, and combined with the actual research data to analyze the emotional elements required by autistic children in furniture products. Then the theory of availability and the availability of furniture products for users in four aspects—cognition, perception, behavior, and function—are elaborated. It discusses the closed-loop relationship between the emotional needs of "people" in emotional design and the emotional supply of "things" in the theory of availability. The design method of emotional availability of furniture for autistic children is proposed, and a series of "Animal Paradise" furniture products are designed to compensate for the emotional demands of autistic children. From the consideration of the emotional element of "human"in emotional design to the feedback of "object" in the theory of availability,a closed-loop system is formed from the precise analysis of users' emotional demands for the products, and then from the furniture products to the users' emotional supply, and then this method is applied to the furniture design for autistic children. This method is then applied to the furniture design of autistic children to provide a design method path to support the emotional fulfillment of this special group.
