A Review of Research on the Health Benefits of Biophilic Design for Dementia Older Adults
As China's population ages, the care of dementia groups has become a difficult and painful issue for national governance.Accompanied by the concept of dementia-friendly,environmental interventions have been proven to have an important energizing effect on alleviating the condition of cognitive disorders, and biophilic design has exerted significant design benefits in promoting positive emotions and improving health and well-being. In this paper, starting from the biophilic design of cognitive disorders,we apply bibliometric methods based on CiteSpace software to visually analyze the research fields, research hotspots, and research levels of related literature data at domestic and international levels and to elaborate on the influence mechanism of biophilic design from four perspectives:psychological-emotional,physiological-functional,behavioral-cognitive,and social-interaction. Meanwhile, measurement tools that can be used in the empirical research of biophilic design are summarized, including subjective perception scales, physiological indicator measurement devices, etc.,in order to comprehensively assess the impact benefits of biophilic environments. Finally, based on the spatial demands of dementia patients, biophilic design strategies to support the dementia community are proposed in terms of establishing biophilic protective barriers, raising the psychological threshold of environmental experience, and creating unstructured and diverse social scenes. The study suggests that future focus should be on exploring the biophilic experience brought about by new technologies and approaches, strengthening their empirical application in built environments, user populations, and perceptual experiences, realizing the interactive coupling between individual health states and environmental elements, and guiding the construction and evaluation of dementia spaces to enhance the health and well-being of the aging population.
