Type Supplement and Method Subdivision of Unconscious Design System Method
The unconscious design method proposed by Naoto Fukasawa has been widely utilized in the Japanese design community due to its advantages in text expression within design practice. In"Ecology of Design,"Fukasawa classifies unconscious design into two fundamental types:"objective sketch,"which emphasizes the generation and meaning transmission of two new symbolic conventions within the product system;and"layering,"which focuses on rhetorical interpretation between products and external elements.Given the broad nature of these classifications, this paper supplements the types and refines the methods of unconscious design by considering three types of environments and four symbolic sources related to the interaction between users and products, resulting in three main types and six design methods. The structuralist characteristics of unconscious design are evident in how text expression revolves around four symbolic conventions, which encompass the user's three cognitive approaches to the product, featuring both"transcendent"and"existing"attributes to ensure accurate and effective meaning transmission. The supplement and subdivision of unconscious design types also summarize the effectiveness of structuralist product text expression, establishing it as a systematic tool for guiding design practice.
