Research on Opening Remarks in Japanese Conversations—Centered on the Situations of"Request"and"Refusal"
This paper focuses on the use of opening remarks by native Japanese speakers in the situations of"request"and"refusal".By using survey and corpus analysis,this paper examines how opening remarks reflect re-spect and care,and affect social interaction through a detailed analysis of conversation.It is found that in the re-quest situation,the opening remark is diverse and strategic,rich in introducing,laying the groundwork,explain-ing,understanding and other functions to promote the acceptance of the request.In the situation of refusal,the opening remark aims to mitigate negative effects,maintain harmonious relationship,and strategically choose words according to specific reasons.This paper expounds the important social functions of opening remarks in Japanese,and probes into the communication strategies in Japanese culture,which is helpful for non-native speak-ers to better master Japanese communicative skills.
