Clinical application essentials and cases of the pulse taking method at left Renying versus at right Qikou
The method of taking pulses at left Renying versus at right Qikou originated from Lingshu(Miraculous Pivot),on which a dispute in the past dynasties focuses on whether to take Renying on the left and Qikou on the right or to take the left and right Cunkou when feeling pulses.Wang Shuhe first distinguished the left Renying site and the right Qikou site in his masterpiece Mai J ing(Pulse Classic). The pulse taking method operates as follows:Firstly, the left and right Cunkou pulses are located.Next, yin and yang are identified by comparing the left and right pulses at the sites one fen up from Guan. Then, the pulse manifestations between the sites one fen up from Guan and Guan itself can be compared to identify the three yin channels and the three yang channels,to decide whether a disease is located in the superficies or the interior according to a floating pulse or a deep pulse,to differentiate a wind invasion syndrome or a cold invasion syndrome according to the pulse feeling methods of touching or pressing, and finally to determine a treatment scheme and formulate a prescription. The clinical application of this pulse taking method can enable one to realize the corresponding relationship between the pulse manifestations of six meridians and the symptoms of six meridians,in which the pulse manifestations reflect the natures of diseases, and change as diseases progress. When pulse manifestations are not consistent with symptoms in a disease, pulse manifestations instead of symptoms should be taken into account to grasp the core pathogenesis of the disease.
