A case study on the treatment of severe depression by Academician Tong Xiaolin based on the"reinforcing yang and dispelling haze"theory
Depression is a common chronic mental illness. At present,it is primarily treated with antidepressants, but their side effects often lead to patients interrupting treatment.Academician Tong Xiaolin first proposes categorizing depression as a"haze"disease with a core pathogenesis of insufficient yang qi.This case report presents a patient with severe depression who is successfully treated by Academician Tong Xiaolin using the theory of"reinforcing yang and dispelling haze",based on the differentiation of her states and targets.During the treatment,Tong Xiaolin interferes with the patient's"cold state and deficient state"with herbs such as epimedium herb, milkvetch root, and suberect spatholobus stem to regulate yang qi,coupled with high-dose Chuanlian, common anemarrhena rhizome, and peony root to lower blood sugar, and supplemented with fresh ginger to warm the stomach, gradually improving the patient's overall symptoms.By reinforcing yang qi and adjusting states, the patient's mood improves significantly, and his blood sugar levels decrease, demonstrating the potential and advantages of the traditional Chinese medicine theory of"reinforcing yang and dispelling haze"in the treatment of depression.
