Translation and Dissemination of Chinese Philosophical Classics from the Actor-network Theory:A Case Study of A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy by Wing-tist Chan
Wing-tist Chan's translation of Chinese philosophical classics promotes the spread of Chinese philosophy in the English world.Based on the Actor-network Theory and Bourdieu's concept of field and capital,this paper explores the transla-tion and dissemination of A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy by Wing-tist Chan.With relatively abundant sociacultural capital in the philosophical field,Wing-tist Chan jointly initiates the translation project of the book and successfully recruits the human and non-human actors including publishing houses,foundations,editors and academic experts to construct the translation and publishing network.After the translation is published,the operation of the Princeton University Press,the review of the experts and scholars,and the comments of online readers constitute the three actor-networks of the dissemination of the classics.Each network is relatively autonomous,but progressive in the process of action,and interconnected with each other,which promotes the dissemination of the Chinese philosophical classics overseas.
