Overview of the Origins and Fundamental Principles of Semiotics
Semiotics is the study of meaning. For conscious individuals, all things are"sign-objects"that carry meaning, and human society's cultural system is a system of sign representation. Both Eastern and Western traditions have a long history of attention to and research on the issue of signs.Modern semiotics was born in the early 20th century, with its main founders being the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce. So far, semiotics has five main modes.Since the 1920s,Chinese semiotics has made its own contributions internationally.A sign can be defined as a"form of meaning that is perceptible."The function of signs is to signify, playing a manifest role in the continual accumula-tion and deepening of meaning, and in the ongoing construction of social culture.Signs are composed of two fundamental parts:the sign itself and the accompanying text.
