An Initial Exploration of Black Humor in the Scores of British Comedy Films—A Case Study of the Music in Ealing Comedies(1947-1958)
The music of Ealing comedies stands out in the world of comedy film music due to its unique British humor and specific historical context.The popularity of British comedies worldwide is closely linked to their film scores,as evidenced by the distinctive music of Ealing comedies.These scores are innovative,blending technical skill with artistic expression,and balancing industrial and individualistic elements,making a striking contrast with Hollywood comedy film music.This paper ex-plores the black humor in Ealing comedy scores,focusing on the musical style of black humor and its underlying realist themes.The study positions these elements within a temporal and spatial framework,examining selected film examples.It also compares the music of Ealing comedies with British comedy film music from different periods and with comedy film music from other countries,highlighting the unique flavor of Ealing comedy scores.
