The Chinese Script Reform Committee and the Promotion of the National Common Language and Script
Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, script reform and educational expansion became urgent tasks in building a socialist nation. In 1954,the Chinese Script Reform Committee(commonly referred to as"Chinese Script Re-form Committee")was established as the leading national institution for language and script reform. Its responsibilities included simplifying Chinese characters, formulating and implementing the Scheme for the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet(Hanyu Pinyin),pro-moting Mandarin, and eradicating illiteracy. In 1985,the committee was renamed the National Language and Script Working Com-mittee.Over its 32 years of operation,China's language and script initiatives achieved remarkable progress, and the committee's work laid a critical foundation for the comprehensive promotion of the national common language and script.
