Historical Traceability and Media Construction of the Chinese National Community Discourse:A Study Based on Hong Kong Progressive Press during the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression
As an important resource of political discourse in recent years,Chinese national community consciousness has also attracted sustained attention from the theoretical community.So far,scholars have mostly defined it in terms of cognitive,emotional and behavioral dimensions,while there is still room for further exploration in terms of the formation mechanism,research objects and disciplinary affiliation.In the 1930s and 1940s,under the leadership or influence of the Communist Party of China(CPC),Hong Kong progressive press adopted a discourse strategy that was both principled and flexible,and engaged in internal and external discourse struggles with the fascist invaders of Japan,the Wang puppet regime,and the reactionary factions in Chiang's regime,so as to maximize the community of shared future in wartime,and to win over the recognition of our compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao,the Chinese diaspora,and international friends,thus providing a powerful force for the victory of the war of resistance against Japanese Aggression,the cohesion of public sentiment,and the unity of the nation.Therefore,examining the construction of the discourse of the Chinese national community by Hong Kong progressive press during the corresponding period of the War of Resistance has the dual value of recognizing the facts and guiding the practice.In terms of the framework selection,this paper makes reference to the well-established methods of discourse analysis and discourse-historical methodology,and restores the reality of the historical text in front of the discourse stage and recognizes the reality of the historical scene behind the discourse stage through the dual interaction dimensions of the"history of discourse"and the"discourse of history".In terms of historical sources,it mainly relies on the electronic originals of Hong Kong progressive press,supplemented by archives,anthologies,letters,diaries,memoirs,and relevant monographs and essays;in terms of historiographical paradigms,it tries to look for a point of integration between the school of historical materials and the school of historical viewpoints,reads more pertinent materials with awareness of problems,and engages in theoretical dialogues on the basis of clearing up the story of history;in terms of practical values,we hope to"use history as a mirror"and offer suggestions for the cause of national identity and the belonging of the people of Hong Kong.This paper found that in 1936,the Life Daily,which was founded by the colorful democrats of the National Salvation Association,promoted"national liberation"through the promotion of"popular culture"and used the more inclusive and less ambiguous expression"National United Front"instead of"People's Front".In 1938,the Hong Kong edition of Ta Kung Pao,which was operated by patriotic capital,shifted from the strategy of"training people to know what is shameful and therefore fight bravely on the battlefield"to the policy of"resisting against Japanese Aggression with one heart"after communicating with all the forces of the anti-Japanese national community,and took the Wang puppet regime as the target of its arguments and the key to breaking the deadlock.In 1941,Huashang Daily paid special attention to the"national liberation and world future",which also made the link between the"anti-Japanese national community"and the"world anti-fascist community"closer,and depicted the picture of the emergence,strengthening and expansion of the related discourse.The rich historical resources and strong practical needs of Chinese national community shaped the causes of the discourse,while the imagery of friendship and enemy,the practice of editorializing and reading,and the united front publicity of the Hong Kong progressive press during the war period presented the impact of the discourse.The uniqueness of the progressive press is reflected in its significant role as a link between China at home and China abroad,expanding the space of the Chinese national community.Finally,through the study of the historical origins and media construction of the Chinese national community discourse,this paper provides historical references for dealing with the problem of discourse representation in the complex public opinion arena in Hong Kong,and formulating a strategy of discourse mobilization for the cause of Hong Kong people's national identity and belonging to the Chinese people.
