Influence of coil parameters on the losses of molded inductors
The power loss of inductors is crucial for their high-frequency applications. The distribution characteristics of magnetic intensity and current density in the molded inductors with three types of coil parameters were analyzed, and then the influences of the coil parameters on their core loss and coil loss were investigated in detail. The dimen-sions of the inductors are 6.6 mm X 6.6 mm X 2.8 mm,and three types of coil parameters are as follows:number of turns(N)=12 and coil diameter(D)=2.5 mm(abbreviated as N12D25),N=10 and D=3 mm(N10D30),N=8 and D=4 mm(N8D40),respectively.The results indicate that a larger coil diameter can reduce the required number of turns when the inductance value is comparable. Moreover, this operation can improve the uniformity of magnetic field distribution in the inductor, and decrease the AC resistance of the coils, thereby simultaneously re-duce the magnetic core loss and coil loss of the inductor.
