The presence of natural organic matter(NOM)can interact with certain contaminants of emerging concern(CECs)in water, affecting their detection, migration, transformation and degradation. The quantitative research methods and mechanism characterization methods represented by fluorescence spectroscopy have laid a foundation for the study of the binding effect of NOM and CECs.The binding mechanism of NOM and CECs includes hydrophobic effects and specific effects related to polar groups on NOM.The intensity of binding is related to the intrinsic properties, concentrations, and prevailing environmental conditions both of NOM and CECs.NOM can be used as a reactant, initiator and accelerator to promote the natural and chemical degradation of CECs.In treatment processes such as flocculation, adsorption and membrane filtration processes, specific concentrations of NOM can enhance the removal efficiency of CECs by providing additional adsorption sites.
