Properties,Disasters, and Resource Potential of Mine Waste Tailings
Tailings are the residual solid waste after ore grinding and separation. The physical and chemical properties of tailings and the conventional surface storage of tailings reservoir lead to greater safety and environmental risks in tailings reser-voir.Under the trend of high-intensity mining of low-grade ore bodies, the annual discharge of tailings in China is maintained at a high level of more than 1 billion tons, and the cumulative storage scale exceeds 20 billion tons. The storage method, potential disaster prevention and comprehensive utilization of fine-grained tailings are facing new challenges.New technology and equip-ment for mining and beneficiation and favorable policy factors promote the potential of tailings resources to be released urgent-ly.Therefore,taking the physical and chemical properties of tailings, discharge and storage methods,dam-break disasters and tailings resource potential as the main line, the research progress of tailings physical and chemical properties, tailings storage forms, tailings dam-break disaster prevention and control are reviewed. The resources comprehensive utilization methods of tail-ings goaf filling, tailings preparation materials, tailings secondary utilization, hyperaccumulator plant extraction of metal ele-ments,tailings carbon sequestration are systematically sorted out, which can provide enlightenment for researchers and industry to systematically re-examine the characteristics of tailings waste, tailings reservoir disaster prevention and control, and sustain-able development and utilization of minerals.
