Analysis of main source of typical odorants in plain reservoirs
Both cyanobacteria and actinomycetes are capable of producing 2-Methylisoborneol(2-MIB)and geosmin(GSM).However, there is a deficiency in research on identifying the main source of odor pollution in reservoirs.Identifying the main source is crucial for preventing and con-trolling odor pollution in plain reservoirs. To address this situation,we conducted a study in two plain reservoirs in Tianjin,China.Continuous monitoring of the water bodies and sediments re-vealed that the main odorant in both reservoirs was 2-MIB,and the relative abundance of Acti-nobacteria in sediment increased and reached a maximum in August.Whereas, the proportion of dissolved 2-MIB in the BR reservoir decreased significantly to about 20%,and the concentration of 2-MIB was significantly correlated with Oscillaria(P<0.01).In contrast, the proportion of dis-solved 2-MIB in the WQ reservoir remained at about 90%and the correlation between the concen-tration of 2-MIB and the cyanobacteria was not significant. It was inferred that the proliferation of Oscillaria was the main cause of the odor pollution in BR reservoir.WQ reservoir was less affected by odor-producing cyanobacteria, and actinobacteria were identified as the main source.Compari-son of the water quality and topography of the two reservoirs showed that the difference in the main odor sources may be attributed to:The average water depth of WQ reservoir was 7 m,and the BR reservoir was 4.6 m.The shallow depth of the water was more conducive to the growth of odor-producing algae that living in subsurface layer. The average value of TP in the WQ reservoir was 0.01 mg/L,and the BR reservoir was 0.04 mg/L,it provided more nutrition for algal growth. The results indicated that the main sources of odor pollution in plain reservoirs in the same region may be different, and it can be analyzed through the percentage of dissolved odorants, and the cor-relation of odor concentration and cyanobacteria quantity.
