Review on dissimilatory iron reduction in industrial water treatment
Dissimilatory iron reduction(DIR)is widely distributed in anaerobic environments containing Fe(Ⅲ),playing an important role in degradation of pollutants(e.g.heavy metals,aro-matics,organochlorines,etc).The special biochemical characteristics of DIR bacteria grant them strong resistance to toxic pollutants, making them promising for industrial water treatment. This paper introduced the biochemical process of DIR,discussed its removal mechanism of typical pollu-tants,summarized and look forward to its application and technology coupling in industrial water treatment. It is suggested that future research should focus on improving the electron transfer efficiency and developing new technologies to couple DIR with other materials to fully exploit its potential in environmental applications.
