The tendency to use electronic cigarettes and influencing factors among adolescents in Changzhou City
Objective To investigate the prevalence of environmental tobacco exposure and changes in the tendency to use elec-tronic cigarettes among adolescents in Changzhou City and to identify the possible influencing factors,so as to provide insights into early interventions for electronic cigarettes among adolescents.Methods Junior,senior and vocational high school students were sampled from main urban areas of Changzhou City in 2019 and 2021 using a multistage stratified cluster probability sampling method for ques-tionnaire surveys.Results The proportions of tendency to use electronic cigarettes were 11.7%and 11.6%in 2019 and 2021,and the proportions of secondhand smoke exposure were 72.8%and 67.2%,while the proportions of exposure to electronic cigarettes adver-tisements were 25.7%and 34.0%,respectively.Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that adjustment for year,gender and age,attempts to use electronic cigarettes[odds ratio(OR)=23.285,95%confidential interval(CI):(12.658,42.833)],friends'smoking[OR=2.516,95%CI:(1.706,3.710)],exposure to secondhand smoke[OR=1.885,95%CI:(1.215,2.924)],thinking that smoking is more attractive[OR=2.101,95%CI:(1.040,4.247)]and discomfort with smoking at social occasions[OR=2.309,95%CI:(1.381,3.843)]resulted in a higher proportion of tendency to use electronic cigarettes among adolescents,and thinking that smok-ing may be less attractive resulted in a lower risk of tendency to use electronic cigarettes among adolescents[OR=0.448,95%CI:(0.301,0.668)].Conclusions There is a high proportion of tendency to use electronic cigarettes among adolescents in Changzhou City.Intensified supervision of electronic cigarettes advertisements is needed,and smoking behaviors are required to be corrected through peer education and extensive social propaganda.
