Willingness to receive HIV testing and its influencing factors among university students in a university in Hainan Province
Objective To investigate the willingness to receive HIV testing among university students in a city and identify the factors affecting the willingness,so as to provide insights into facilitating HIV testing among university students. Methods A strati-fied cluster sampling method was employed, and an anonymous self-filled questionnaire survey was performed among university students in October,2021.A binary logistic regression analysis was performed with willingness to receive HIV testing or not as a dichotomous de-pendent variable, and demographics,AIDS-related knowledge, characteristics of sexual behaviors as independent variables. Results A total of 1 642 valid questionnaires were recovered.Of all respondents,63.4%were female, and 62.1%majored in medicine. The inci-dence of sexual behaviors was 9.3%(15.8%in men and 5.5%in women),and the awareness of AIDS-related knowledge was 88.7%,while 86.1%of the respondents had willingness to receive HIV testing.Multivariate analysis showed that the willingness to receive HIV testing was 1.38 times[95%confidential interval(CI):(1.01,1.91)]higher among women than among men,and the number of re-spondents aware of AIDS-related knowledge was 2.11 times[95%CI:(1.36,3.26)]greater than those unaware of AIDS-related knowledge, while the number of respondents aware of free voluntary HIV counselling and testing(VCT)services was 1.504 times[95%CI:(1.09,2.07)]greater than those unaware of free VCT services. In addition, respondents thinking that HIV testing had no danger[odds ratio(OR)=1.90,95%CI:(1.24,2.92)]or thinking that HIV testing was required following high-risk sexual behaviors[OR=1.67,95%CI:(1.00,2.78),P<0.05]were more willing to receive HIV testing, and the willingness to receiving HIV testing was lower among respondents that were not afraid of AIDS patients and thought HIV testing was not beneficial than among other respondents(OR=0.42 and 0.36,both P values<0.05).Conclusions Gender, awareness of AIDS-related knowledge and awareness of VCT services and HIV testing are factors affecting the willingness to receive HIV testing, and the willingness to receive HIV testing is lower among male university students than among female students, which should be paid much attention to.
