Prevalence of central obesity among children and adolescents at ages of 7 to 17 years in Suzhou City based on different criteria
Objective To investigate the prevalence of central obesity among children and adolescents at ages of 7 to 17 years in Suzhou City based on different criteria. Methods A total of 3 150 children and adolescents at ages of 7 to 17 years were sampled from Suzhou City using a stratified cluster sampling method during the period between September and October,2019,for questionnaire sur-veys and field measurements. The prevalence of central obesity was assessed using five criteria and the consistency of four other criteria was examined with the waist circumference defined in the Chinese criteria as the standard. Results The detection of central obesity was 24.70%according to the international criteria of waist circumference,20.60%according to the Chinese criteria of waist circumfer-ence,6.54%according to the American criteria of waist circumference,23.65%according to the Chinese criteria of waist-to-height ratio and 14.22%according to the international criteria of waist-to-height ratio among the study subjects. The prevalence of central obe-sity was all higher among men than among women according to the five criteria(all P values<0.05).The detection of central obesity was higher among subjects at ages of 12 to 17 years than among those at ages of 7 to 11 years according to the international and Chinese criteria of waist circumference(both P values<0.05),and lower among subjects at ages of 12 to 17 years than among those at ages of 7 to 11 years according the American criteria of waist circumference(P<0.05).Based on the Chinese criteria of waist circumference as a standard, there was a high consistency of the Chinese criteria of waist circumference with the international criteria of waist circumference(Kappa value=0.87)and international criteria of waist-to-height ratio(Kappa value=0.79).Conclusions The detection of central obesity is relatively high among children and adolescents at ages of 7 to 17 years in Suzhou City, and high attention is recommended to be paid to the prevalence of central obesity assessed based on waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio among children and adoles-cents.
