Gender identity and gender-affirming healthcare services among transgender women:a qualitative interview
Objective To investigate gender identity experiences and current status of gender-affirming healthcare among trans-gender women,so as to provide evidence for improving transgender healthcare services.Methods Eligible transgender women were re-cruited through recruitment by social welfare organizations and using the snowball sampling method for one-on-one qualitative interview,and the sample size was defined according to the saturation principle.Results A total of 12 transgender women were interviewed,in-cluding 10 respondents presenting manifestations and behaviors unlike their biological genders since childhood and 6 presenting remark-able hating of male characteristics.Four respondents had used hormones,and the main causes of no use of hormones included difficulty in obtaining transsexuality certificates to get sustainable hormone therapy,economic burdens and potential discrimination.Only two re-spondents completed gender-affirming surgery,and the main causes of no gender-affirming surgery included economic burdens of surger-y,certificates of parental awareness and inadequate transgender healthcare services.Conclusions Improved systems and guidelines of gender-affirming healthcare services and improved access to gender-affirming healthcare services may facilitate the access to formal and professional guiding of healthcare services among transgender women.
