Safety and efficacy of vitamin C combined with sodium bicarbonate to neutralize Lugol's iodine
Objective To observe the safety and efficacy of vitamin C combined with sodium bicarbonate for neutralizing Lugol's iodine. Methods A total of 156 patients undergoing general gastroscopy were divided into three groups with 52 cases each. After routine endoscopy,2%Lugol's iodine solution 10 mL was sprayed into the esophagus for iodine staining. After iodine staining, group A was sprayed with 5%sodium thiosulfate solution 20 mL,group B was sprayed with 2%vitamin C solution 20 mL and group C was sprayed with 2%vitamin C and 1%sodium bicarbonate mixture 20 mL.The incidences of discomfort symptoms were evaluated at 5 minutes,30 minutes and 24 hours after iodine staining. The fading effects of esophageal mucosa and gastric mucous pool were evaluated. Results The incidence of total adverse reactions within 24 hours after iodine staining was lower in group C than that in group A(P<0.05).The discomfort symptom score of group C was lower than that of group A at 5 minutes after iodine staining(P<0.05).There were no significant differences in the fading effect scores of esophageal mucosa and gastric mucous pool among the three groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Vitamin C combined with sodium bicarbonate can be used to neutralize Lugol's iodine with low incidence of adverse reactions and without influence on the fading effect.
