Efficacy of upper cervical joint mobilization in treating chronic temporomandibular disorders
Objective To observe the efficacy of upper cervical joint mobilization in the treatment of chronic temporomandibular disorders. Methods Sixty patients with chronic temporomandibular disorders were randomly divided into two groups with 30 cases each. The patients in group A were treated with upper cervical joint mobilization and temporomandibular joint physical therapy and those in group C were treated with upper cervical pseudoarthrosis and temporomandibular joint physical therapy. The changes in VAS pain scores, maximum mouth opening(MMO),and jaw functional limitation scale(JFLS-20)scores before and after treatment were compared between the two groups. Results Compared to before, the VAS pain scores,MMO,and JFLS-20 scores of the two groups after 2 weeks of treatment were all obviously improved(P<0.01),the improvements of which were more in group A than those in group C(P<0.05).After 3 months of treatment, the improvements of the MMO and JFLS-20 scores were better in group A than those in group C(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Conclusion Upper cervical joint mobilization can improve MMO and jaw function, and alleviate pain of patients with chronic temporomandibular disorders.
