Vibration monitoring is an effective way to examine the health status of the vessel power equipment.A vibration mo-nitoring system must face the challenge of handling and transmitting tremendous volume of data.Large central controller pro-cessing capacity is necessary if the process is centralized. The concept of edge computing is introduced to relieve the load on the central processor.Edge layers are inserted between data producers and the central processor and let them to complete jobs such as data collection,pre-processing,feature value extraction and upload data filtering locally beside the data producers.A ship vi-bration monitoring system based on this concept is developed and tested on a ship. For the system requirement of saving feature data every 2 s and saving original data every 10 min,the total data volume is found to be 0.4%of that in the system without edge layer design.
