Forty Years of the Classification of Instructional Programs:Change Course and Development Characteristics
The National Center for Education Statistics under the U.S.Department of Education promulgat-ed the first edition of the Classification of Instructional Programs in 1980,and revised it in 1985,1990,2000,2010,and 2020.This paper reviews the background of the establishment of the Classification of Instructional Programs, systematically sorts out the development process in the past 40 years and divides its development pro-cess into three stages:the foundation period, the structural optimization period and the deepening and expan-sion period.Through historical combing,it is found that the functional positioning of statistical services, the sci-entific and democratic compilation procedure, and the inclusive and coherent contents of the Classification of In-structional Programs have been consistently inherited, while the rocketing development of emerging and inter-disciplinary disciplines, the rapid development of traditional applied disciplines, the optimization and adjust-ment of traditional theoretical disciplines, and the steady change of vocational and adult education in the Classi-fication of Instructional Programs reflect that the Classification of Instructional Programs changes with the needs of American social development.
