The Rise and Application of Academic Program Review in the United States
The academic program review in US rose in the 1960s and 1970s.The increase of accountabili-ty,reduction of government funding,duplication of specialties,and application of new university management technology had promoted the development of academic program review.The academic program review has multi-ple purposes and can be classified into different types based on different standards.The popular models that have been used in academic program review include the Prioritization Model,the QPC model,the four-level learning evaluation model,and independently-devised methodologies.There are still controversies on the prac-tice of academic program review regarding the effectives of multiple purposes,the organic combination with ac-creditation,and the application for discontinuation of programs.There is a development trend of combining with student learning outcomes assessment,and being more closely linked to strategic planning.Drawing on the expe-rience of the United States,China should speed up the establishment and improvement of the academic program review system at the provincial and university levels,explore the construction of diversified review system,and strengthen the application of review results in management decision-making.
